Cutworm

Gray-brown worms that chew young plants and frequently cut off stems near the ground. Tomatoes, peppers, beans and pea plants are susceptible. Cutworms live in the soil during the day and emerge at night to feed above ground. Cutworms curl up when unearthed. Some cutworms can climb up plants to feed on fruit and leaves.
